The posts shared on social media by Vivek Ramaswamy and ‘X’ boss, Elon Musk, calling for an expansion for the H-1B visa program, have generated discussion among Americans who support Donald Trump, American president-elect.
Ramaswamy and Musk, who are among Trump’s favorites, have been appointed by the president-elect to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, as they claimed that the tech companies in the country rely heavily on highly skilled foreign employees to thrive.
The X boss reiterated that there is a need to double the number of the engineers that the U.S. currently has, likening the program to professional sports teams signing good players across the globe.
The politician and businessman, Ramaswamy, was in full support of Musk’s position as he put the blame on “American culture” that picks mediocrity ahead of excellence and referenced portrayals of smart students in TV sitcoms as examples.
Their positions have been criticized by those who are loyalists of Donald Trump, among them Laura Loomer, Ann Coulter, and Matt Gaetz, who say that expanding the H-1B program may pose a negative effect on the president-elect’s agenda to curb immigration and place value on American labor. Nikki Haley is also another politician who did not support Musk and Ramaswamy’s sentiment, calling on Trump’s government to put more attention on American workers.
Trump, who restricted foreign workers in his first term before he was voted out, has said that he will be open to giving legal status to foreign students who graduate from U.S. universities.
Among those who support the sentiment by Musk and Ramaswamy are the Democrats.
