The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) has suspended British Olympic dressage rider Charlotte Dujardin, currently ranked fourth in the world, following allegations of conduct contrary to horse welfare principles.

The controversy started when a video, reportedly four years old, was submitted to the FEI by a lawyer representing an undisclosed complainant. The footage, allegedly taken during a private training session conducted by Dujardin, shows her whipping a horse on the legs multiple times while witnesses laughed in the background. This prompted an immediate investigation by the international governing body of equestrian sports.

In response to these allegations, Charlotte Dujardin has withdrawn from the upcoming Paris Olympics and all other competitions. She released a statement acknowledging an “error of judgment” during the coaching session, expressing deep remorse for her actions.

“What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils, however there is no excuse,” Dujardin stated.

She has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigations by the FEI, British Equestrian Federation, and British Dressage.

FEI President Ingmar De Vos commented on the situation, saying,

“We are deeply disappointed with this case, especially as we approach the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. However, it is our responsibility and crucial that we address any instances of abuse, as equine welfare cannot be compromised.”

British Equestrian and British Dressage have also suspended Dujardin provisionally while the investigation is ongoing. Both organizations have emphasized their commitment to upholding the highest standards of equine welfare.

The FEI has stated it will not issue further comments until the investigation concludes to maintain its integrity.

Charlotte Dujardin, a decorated Olympian with multiple gold medals, was slated to represent Great Britain at the Paris Olympics with her mount Imhotep. Her withdrawal has led to changes in the British dressage team, with Becky Moody and Jagerbomb now standing as the reserve combination.
