Young American tennis star Coco Gauff has beaten world no. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to win her first-ever French Open Title at Roland-Garros on Saturday.
Sabalenka had taken the lead quickly in the first set, beating Gauff 4-1 and 40-0 in the 6th game of the first set before Gauff decided to fight back.
The world no. 1 was well on her way to winning another French Open Title, but the final was far from over. Gauff came to play and that was what she was going to do.
“I didn’t think honestly that I could do it, but I’d like to quote American rap star Tyler the Creator, who said: ‘If I ever told you that I had a doubt inside me, I must be lying. I think I was lying to myself, because I could do it,” said Coco after she received her trophy.
Coco became the first American and the first black woman to win the French Open in ten years, since Serena Williams.
Sabalenka could have won the trophy, especially after the first set, but she kept making mistakes that proved costly at the end. Gauff also stood her ground and finished the game after winning the second set.
After the game, the world no. 1 was in tears, addressing the crowd, apologising for her performance in the final, which was not up to standard.
“I think it got more windy after (her first set streak) Also, I think I was overemotional. I think today I didn’t really handle myself quite well mentally, I would say. So basically, that’s it,” Sabalenka said.
Many important figures have congratulated Coco Gauff for her achievements and for putting America on the map.
Former President and First Lady of the United States Barack Obama and Michelle Obama suggested Coco is an inspiration to young black girls who are wired to think they can not make it.
