The Kansas City Royals have just initiated a call-up of 22-year-old masher Jac Caglianone, not up to a year after he was taken as the sixth overall. The Royals appear desperate, and Jac Caglianone seems to be the perfect addition that is needed on the team.
Caglianone merits the promotion after a long fight and effort put in for it. He annihilated the pitching with 56 RBIs, 15 home runs, and a savage .322/.389/.593 slash line across 50 games in Double-A and Triple-A.
At 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, he’s pure muscle and menace. Florida molded him into a two-way threat, but Kansas City made him choose. Now he’s a full-time bat, and a terrifying one.
The team has a plan for him in the outfield. That’s where he’s been playing in Omaha. That’s where he’ll be when the Royals open the series in St. Louis on Tuesday.
His power is volcanic; he doesn’t hit baseballs. His launches are missiles. His exit velocities are like those of Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani. He’s not just hype; he’s thunder in cleats.
Despite all his attributes, the player strikes out only 20% of the time. But the royals hesitated. They worried about his plate discipline, his chase, and if big-league arms would expose him, but the team can no longer wait for an answer.
The offence is coming down. Dead last in home runs. Nearly last in runs. The outfield has been a graveyard for production: a.237/.283/.330 line with just seven home runs and 46 RBIs in 663 plate appearances. That’s the worst in baseball. Every category. Every stat.
Meanwhile, the pitching staff has done its part. Only 201 runs allowed, the second-fewest in the majors. But the bats haven’t matched the effort. The 31-29 record doesn’t lie, but it flatters.
Caglianone enters the chaos with Bobby Witt Jr. as the future middle of the order. Big swings. Big fixes. Big stage.
To make a place for him, the Royals outfielder Dairon Blanco was sent back to Triple-A Omaha.
Caglianone needs to put in a lot of effort to prove what he is made of.
