Detroit Lions’ stalwart center, Frank Ragnow, says he is done as he took to social media on Monday to announce his retirement from the NFL. Ragnow is now a four-time Pro Bowl selection.
“These past couple of months have been very trying as I’ve come to the realization that my football journey is ending and I’m officially retiring from the NFL,” Ragnow posted to Instagram. “I’ve tried to convince myself that I’m feeling good, but I’m not, and it’s time to prioritise my health and my family’s future. I have given this team everything I have, and I thought I had more to give, but the reality is I simply don’t.
“I have to listen to my body, and this has been one of the hardest decisions of my life. The Lions organization has been absolutely incredible throughout this process, and I can’t emphasize enough how grateful I am for this team and all the fans. It was an absolute honor going to battle for you all.”
Ragnow featured in 16 games last season but missed only the Week 4 game against Seattle because of a torn pectoral muscle. He returned from injury without missing a start and secured his third straight Pro Bowl nod.
The 29-year-old player was drafted in the first round in 2018 and played every one of his 96 career matches as a starter. He secured his second-team All-Pro honors in 2020, 2023, and 2024, making him one of the league’s elite offensive linemen.
He was robbed of most of the 2021 season by turf toe, while the pain never relented. He was betrayed again in 2022 by the same toe, causing him to push through what he tagged as one of the hardest years of his career.
He declared in 2023 that surgery was no longer an option for him, but the injury became permanent. He is usually pushed anyway until now.
