Sports Science Host And Creator, John Brenkus Dies Battling Depression

John Brenkus, a six-time Emmy Award winner whose groundbreaking show ESPN and Fox Sports Net aired, is dead at 54 years old. He battled depression, one that spanned many years.

The program, Sports Science, was launched in 2007 on Fox Sports Net. Later, it was moved to ESPN, which eventually bought the brand outright. Brenkus, in his lifetime on the show, hosted more than 1,800 segments, each of them filled with curiosity, spectacle, and impact.

The show was more of the impossible. They include, Why is Tyreek Hill so fast? How does Joey Chestnut inhale dozens of hot dogs without collapsing? The tone swung wildly from analytical to absurd, but the energy continued.

Viewers always have a reason not to miss the show. The episodes hit like a jolt: sharp, curious, and unrelenting.

A few years ago, the legendary host revived the show on his terms. He also publicly mentioned his depression. In 2023, during a raw discussion with Marcellus Wiley, he mentioned that he once attempted to take his own life. He said his dog saved him.

Tributes have flooded in from across sports media and social media after the revelation of his passing.
