Burkina Faso has secured the second-place slot in Group E of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after the team crushed Sudan out of the tournament with a 2-0 win on Wednesday in Casablanca.

Burkina Faso secured the two goals through decisive hits by Lassina Traore and Arsene Kouassi in a game where Sudan lost the opportunity to convert a penalty into a goal that would likely have changed the game’s momentum.

The team finished the group stage with six points after winning two of three games and losing one, finishing three points behind group leaders Algeria, which finished with a perfect record.

Despite crashing out of the group stage, Sudan will feature in the knockout stage as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Burkina Faso is yet to know their Round of 16 opponents as they await the conclusion of Group F games. The team could face defending champions Ivory Coast, Cameroon, or Mozambique.

The last-16 game is slated to be played on Tuesday in Marrakech, where the runners-up of Group E will focus on proceeding with their AFCON games.
