Liverpool finally earned their first Premier League victory of 2026 after a commanding 4-1 win at Anfield against Newcastle United, moving to fifth position in the table with only one point behind Chelsea at 40 points.
Newcastle United scored the first goal against Liverpool, who had earlier played five Premier League matches with no victories. The goal came early as Anthony Gordon gave his side an early goal to earn a strong start.
The game became very dramatic after Hugo Ekitike leveled the score and fired a second before the end of the first half in quick succession, giving Liverpool a boost and a strong recovery.
Florian Wirtz’s pressure for a win came through after he scored a goal to extend Liverpool’s lead as the second half began, before Ibrahima Konaté fired the fourth and last goal later on to seal the victory.
Newcastle United did not wait long in their dominance after their only goal in their failure to recover, extending their local league winless streak at Liverpool’s home, Anfield, to 30 games and dropping back to 10th in the league with six points behind Merseyside.
This win gives Liverpool the hope that they can do better to be part of the next Champions League, while they push their opponents, Newcastle United, farther from the same fate.
