
South Africa qualifies again for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since it last hosted the one in 2010, luckily topping their group stage against Nigeria and the Benin Republic.
The Republic of Benin, which is in high contention against South Africa and leading the Group C stage, bowed to Nigeria in Uyo on Tuesday night after a 4-0 defeat. Galatasaray star Victor Osimhen scored a hat-trick in the 4-0, pushing the Benin Republic to third on the Group C table on goal difference.
The result earned the South Africa side, Bafana Bafana, an automatic qualification for a spot in the FIFA 2026 World Cup after a commanding 3-0 win against Rwanda in Mbombela.
South Africa earned an early lead after scoring the first goal in the fifth minute after the starting whistle through Thalente Mbatha. The Bafana Bafana’s second goal came in the first half after Oswin Appollis fired into the opponent’s post.
Evidence Makgopa sealed South Africa’s win in the second half at the 72nd minute.
The win makes South Africa the seventh nation on the African continent to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in a competition for 48 teams after Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, and Cape Verde.
South Africa bounced back and refused to give up after the points deduction sanctioned against it for fielding an ineligible player by FIFA.
