Sporting CP fought back at two different times before Alisson Santos finally fired a stoppage-time deciding goal to earn a needed 3–2 victory against Athletic Bilbao to book a slot in the Champions League last 16.
Sporting CP, which needed the victory to finish in the top eight, finished in the group stage with 16 points in seventh position in the Champions League table, while their opponents finished 29th and got eliminated.
Athletic Bilbao, the match hosts, made a good start when Oihan Sancet scored the first goal of the game just three minutes after the match started, but Sporting immediately fired back as Ousmane Diomande scored a header through a corner from Maximiliano Araujo.
