Qatar will be playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a spot through a 2-1 win at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium against the UAE. Qatar finished first in the group in their playoff group, which will make it their second time appearing in the FIFA World Cup.

The first goal of the game came not long after the second half whistle was blown through Boualem Khoukhi with a calculated header before Pedro Miguel netted Qatar’s second goal from a free kick played by Akram Afif.

UAE mounted pressure for an equalizer, but they only earned a late goal in return for their effort through a fine kick by Sultan Adil. It was not a good night for the UAE, which is now expected to join the intercontinental play-off for a likely qualification.

The game, which was initially played in a festive moment as thousands of fans of the Emirate came out, was later turned into a brouhaha after Qatar netted two goals, with fans causing disruptions which forced security personnel to wade in.

The UAE’s cautious setup, created to make the game end in a point-sharing draw, ended up backfiring against the sharp side of the game winner, Qatar.

The win makes Qatar’s progress in football, preparing them for the big game next summer, while the UAE did not have the best night, and their hope to return to the World Cup looks faded.
