Unai Emery’s third anniversary as head coach of Aston Villa was marked with joy after the team edged Manchester City 1-0 at Villa Park through a goal from Matty Cash.
Matty Cash, who plays internationally for Poland, netted the only goal 19 minutes after the match started, converting a fine short-corner cross from Emiliano Buendia into City’s bottom corner.
This win earned Aston Villa their fourth consecutive win in the domestic league and their third straight victory against Manchester City, pushing them to seventh place in the Premier League table. At the same time, the loss ended City’s nine-game straight streak and left them six behind Arsenal, which is topping the league.
All efforts for equalisation by Erling Haaland were wasted, including the one that was denied by Emiliano Martinez, while the host didn’t stop pressuring with threats from Ollie Watkins and John McGinn.
Jadon Sancho, who also came in from the substitute bench, forced two saves in the later minutes of the game from Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City also created all chances for a point-sharing game, and Haaland thought he had snatched an equaliser in the 89th minute, but Phil Foden was accused of offside, sealing a win for the home team.
