
Guatemala’s efforts paid off when they got a crucial 1-0 win at the Cuscatlán Stadium against El Salvador in a decisive Group A game of the 2026 Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers.
Guatemala and El Salvador both needed a win in the decisive match, after which they had earlier been placed on the downside of the standings when Panama and Suriname drew earlier and put them jointly on six points.
Guatemala earned the win not too long after the commencement of the second half through the firing home of a nice shot by Oscar Santis, giving Luis Fernando Tena’s side their first three points in a match of the competition.
The victory rekindled hopes of qualification for the next year’s World Cup, pushing them to five points with two crucial home games to play against Suriname and Panama.
The loss by El Salvador has dealt a blow to their qualification journey as they sit at the bottom of the table with only three points recorded so far
The team will now need to do more to secure a qualification spot for the 2026 World Cup by winning their last two away games.
