A beauty influencer by the name of Valeria Marquez was assassinated by a gunman while she was livestreaming on TikTok in her salon.
On Tuesday, the 23-year-old was in her Blossom The Beauty Lounge located in Zapopan, Jalisco, in Mexico while making what turned out to be her last video.
During the live stream, Valeria revealed that she was expecting a package from a delivery person. She let out her worry to her online fans when she said, “Why didn’t he just drop it off? Were they going to pick me up (kidnap me) or what?”
The delivery man asked to confirm if she was Valeria Marquez. When she acknowledged, he fired shots at her. Valeria, who was holding a pink coloured stuffed pig, held her chest and mid-region as the volley of bullets hit her, before the last seemed to hit her on the head.
The motive for her murder is still being investigated by the police. Despite the state of Jalisco having a very high crime rate and her beauty business being located in Zapopan, an area predominantly known for money laundering, drug, and cartel activities, Mexican authorities suspect her killing to have been motivated due to her gender.
The late Valeria Marquez had previously said that her ex-boyfriend, by name Ricardo Ruiz Velazco and also known as ‘El Doble RR’, ‘RR’, or ‘El Tripa’, should be held accountable if anything happens to her or her family, or if she leaves town.
A Mexican media outlet reported that he is now the main suspect, according to Jalisco authorities. It was also reported that their troubles began when Ricardo Ruiz Velazco started complaining about the expensive gifts Valeria Marquez was getting from her fans.
Velazco was also noted to be the leader of a Mexican cartel group called the CJNG’s Elite Group, and was linked with the murder of Venezuelan Daisy Ferrer Arenas and Juan Luis Lagunas, aka ‘El Pirata de Culiacán’.
While Mexico is known for its high indulgence in drug trafficking and crime from warring cartel members, which has spilled to the assassination of politicians, there is also a growing trend of the assassination of TikTok influencers in Jamaica.
