A Nigerian student identified as Deborah Yakubu was killed and burnt to death by her fellow students for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad.
It was reported that the deceased, a 200-level student of Home Economics at Shehu Shagari College of Education, shared a message in the school WhatsApp group, which annoyed her schoolmates and made them attack her.
A source disclosed that “she (Deborah) was having an argument with some of her schoolmates over their ongoing examination, and when she was asked how she managed to pass her exams, she said it was Jesus.
“She was asked to withdraw the statement and apologise, which she refused.
“The school security intervened, took her to their post, but they were overpowered by students, after which she was killed in the process.
“After killing her, her remains were set ablaze and burnt beyond recognition on the school premises.”
Following Deborah’s death, the Sokoto state government called for the immediate shutdown of the school as investigations are ongoing to nab the perpetrators.
The Nigerian Government has been accused of being complacent with Islamic terrorists, and the claims were given more grounds after former vice president and presidential aspirant Atiku Abubakar deleted a tweet where he condemned her killing.
According to him, the tweet was made by his social media handlers without his authorization. He probably didn’t want to risk losing Northern votes, as many berated him for.
However, up till June 09, 2025, despite the visual evidence publicly available to aid prosecution, none of the culprits have been brought to book.
