Sunderland shockingly pulled a 2-1 comeback win against Sheffield United in the final playoff of Championship in Saturday at Wembley, with Tom Watson, a teenage player who came into the game as a substitute firing the deciding goal at stoppage-time.
Watson who is only 19 years old fired a beautiful low shot from outside the box helping Sunderland seal their return to the Premier League, eight years since they were relegated, including time spent in League One.
The victory, courtesy of Watson’s late goal is dubbed “the richest game in football,” as it is set to secure the club about £220 million ($297.79 million) in additional revenue in extra revenue through top-flight TV deals.
The money earned is not as important as the late strike from Watson and return to Premier League to Sunderland’s fans. The win has triggered the fans jubilations.
Sheffield United, ended the regular season with 14 points topping Sunderland, had much of the possession of the match and could not save their pains after the drama at the last minutes of the game.
Despite scoring the goal that will make Sunderland feature in the next Premier League, the player will no longer play for the team as he is on his way to the Brighton & Hove Albion, bidding Sunderland his sweet farewell.
“It’s unbelievable, we’ll see each other in the Premier League next season,” he said. “I have been thinking about it for weeks and that story was written when I came off the bench.”
