Santiago Castro came into the game as a substitute to deliver Bologna by scoring a goal that took the team to their semi-finals in the Italian Cup for the first time since 1999, 26 years ago.
Castro scored the only goal in the game giving them a 1-0 win on Tuesday in Bergamo against Atalanta, the last season’s runner-up.
Castro did not waste much time as he fired into the net just two minutes after coming into the game from the bench by moving past his opponent to head in a free kick in the 80th minute from Charalampos Lykogiannis.
This win is not enough for Bologna as the team now has more to do to seal the title after playing their next game against Empoli or the defending champions Juventus on February 26.
The last semi-finals they were lucky to have in 1999 ended in a 4-2 loss to Fiorentina which later advanced to finals.
After a good record last season, Atalanta continued to encounter troubles in 2025 with this Cup’s exit and winning just two of ten games. AC Milan is scheduled to combat on Wednesday again Roma in the quarterfinal and Inter Milan will play on February 25 against Lazio.
