With the current influx of Haitian migrants into the United States and the many problems that have arisen as a result of recent times, many people wonder what the country looks like. Here is a brief description of Haiti with some pictures and videos.
Haiti is a Caribbean country – the third largest at that with a population of 11.4 million people. It is located on the island of Hispaniola and borders the Dominican Republic to its east.
The country and its people made a notable mark in the book of history as being the first in history to be established by a slave revolution – the Haitian Revolution which was fought between 1791 and 1804. It was also the first country in the Americas to abolish slavery officially.
Despite the country’s ground history, life in Haiti is hard. According to USAID, Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas and it also ranks as one of the poorest countries in the world, with almost half of its population living below the poverty line and over 2.5 million people living in extreme poverty.
Natural disasters such as the 2010 earthquake, massive hurricanes in 2016 and 2017, and the crunching El Niño drought drastically affected the growth of the economy.
Currently, Haiti is faced with unrest from violent gang members, forcing thousands of her citizens to flee into the US, undocumented – an act causing a massive stir due to many reports of crimes allegedly committed by the migrants such as trespassing and stealing of pets for food.
Below are some videos and pictures of Haiti. Though the face of poverty can be seen in photos showing places filled with dirt and slums, the country does have some spots such as beaches for relaxation as well as other tourist attractions.
