
A man took his own life by jumping inside a running aircraft’s engine and getting crushed. The incident happened in at Milan Bergamo Airport in Italy on Tuesday morning, 8th of July.
The man was identified as 35-year-old Andrea Russo was neither a passenger or staff at the airport. He entered the tarmac after going through a restricted area in the vehicle he drove in, a red fiat. He reportedly had a history of hard drugs.
He outran airport officials that were pursuing him leading to the runway where a Volotea Airbus A319 flight V73511 was taxing for takeoff. He first attempted climb the first engine then ran around to the second. He then flung himself inside the jet’s engine, which sucked him inside and crushed him instantly with its massive spinning blades. The aircraft was enroute Asturias, in Spain, from Italy’s Milan.
The entire ordeal was captured on camera, and showed airport officials reacting instantly when he leaped inside the plane’s engine. Another person on the ground was also seriously injured by the accident. The video then continued with the retrival of the pieces of remains of the man.
His death was also felt by passengers inside the aircraft. Local news media La Nueva España reported passengers saying they heard a very large bang, and those by the window were disgusted at what they saw and urged others not to bother looking because of the gory sight.
The pilot announced the incident and another flight was rescheduled in the afternoon by 15:55. The incident also led to the diversion of flights, both inbound and outbound. The airport authority also announced that delays, diversions and cancellations might be experienced till normal operations resumed in the airport later in the day.
However, a passenger that was boarding another aircraft reported on Daily Mailthat the man was sucked inside the engine as he ran towards it. The incident is being investigated by the authorities.
