A man named Fousseynou Cissé saved six people from the sixth floor of a high-rise apartment building that was on fire. The incident happened on Friday, July 4, in Paris.

His rescue mission was captured on camera. It showed the 39-year-old migrant standing on a narrow ledge between two windows and first carrying out two babies. He then took out two kids, a teen and an older woman, all from the balcony of the last floor, which had thick smoke coming out.

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with him on the phone and thanked him for his bravery. He will also be formally honored by Paris with a medal.

Fousseynou Cissé, who works as a school caretaker, said his instincts to save took over him because the situation was a matter of life or death. The family members who were trapped would either be killed by the fire or smoke, or jump through the window. “I didn’t think twice”, he said.

He also lived in the same apartment building that caught fire and was leaving with his wife and 2-year-old child when he heard that there were people trapped on the top floor.

Fousseynou, who is not a French citizen, living with a resident permit, hopes that the Paris Town Hall will hire him.

In May 2018, Mamoudou Gassama, a 22-year-old illegal migrant dubbed the Paris ‘Spider-Man, got hired by the fire service and had his citizenship fast-tracked after he quickly climbed a five-storey building to save a four-year-old child who was holding on to the balcony.

Whether Fousseynou Cissé will be rewarded for his bravery with a citizenship status, a job with the fire brigade, or any other form of reward remains a decision of the state, which will be communicated during his honorary event.
