Oshiomhole Challenges Akpabio Over Senate Leadership Rule

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has questioned the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and requested him to bow out of this seat if the Senate must amend the standing rules.

The proposed amendment to the standing rules forbids new members from becoming principal officers.

The Edo-born senator in his reaction to the controversial amendment claims that Senate President Akpabio himself did not spend up to eight years in the red chambers before he emerged as a principal officer in the federal legislative arm.

Oshiomole, who was a former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress before becoming Edo State governor then senator mentioned that Senator Akpabio needs to lead by example in the eventuality that the amendment to the Senate rule is passed.

The controversial move which intends to bar first-term legislators from assuming important leadership roles in the red chamber has continued to garner debate and controversy among legislators and political observers.

The debate and controversy are centered around inclusiveness, fairness, and democratic representation within the Senate.
