Barcelona returns to their rebuilt Camp Nou with a sound 4-0 win against Athletic Bilbao, who were short of a player after receiving a red card.
Barcelona had more than 4,500 fans in the stadium who were there to celebrate the partial reopening of the Camp Nou stadium, which is on track to become the largest stadium in Europe after undergoing over two years of renovation.
The Catalonian giant recorded an early goal after its striker, Robert Lewandowski, took advantage of a defensive error by Athletic Bilbao and converted it into a goal after 4 minutes of the game.
As the first half was nearing an end, young star Lamine Yamal created a fine assist through a long pass, which Ferran Torres converted into a goal to double Barcelona’s lead.
As the second half began, Athletic Bilbao created another costly error, which Fermin Lopez converted into a goal, making it Barcelona’s third goal in the game. A red card shown to Oihan Sancet added to the visitor’s trouble, and Torres’ goal again sealed Barcelona’s win through another assist created by Spanish international Yamal.
The win puts Barcelona on the same points as its major rival, Real Madrid. Major construction continues in Camp Nou despite the festive period as the reworked 105,000-capacity Camp Nou stadium nears completion.
