Pam Bondi, the United States Attorney General, was in the middle of a fierce screening during a hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee, as she was being accused by Democrats of politicizing the Department of Justice, while she had been commended by the Republicans for restoring focus on law enforcement.
AG Bondi was at the hearing defending her leadership after James Comey, a former FBI Director, was indicted. The Attorney General mentioned that she plans to put an end to the “weaponisation of justice” and set the attention of the Department of Justice on violent crime.
She also mentioned an increase in federal efforts in Memphis and Washington, D.C., as a defense of sending the National Guard to cities, including Portland and Chicago.
Democrats fielded her with a question of whether the prosecution of Comey has the colouration of politics in it, as they also criticised her reversal on releasing the Jeffrey Epstein files.
Pam Bondi blamed the opposition for hindering public safety amid the government shutdown and blamed them for getting in the way of public safety.
While there was lots of backlash and resignation of staff at the DOJ, the Attorney General got the support of Republicans, including Chairman Chuck Grassley, who says her reforms were needed to put back trust in the enforcement of the law.
