Mikel Merino, who plays midfield for Arsenal, netted two goals for Spain against Bulgaria as they stayed in the top position in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in Group E.
This win makes it Spain’s fourth straight victory, as it also expanded their perfect record with no goal conceded and 15 goals scored.
The first goal of the game was scored by Merino through an assist by R. Le Normand in the 35th minute of the first half of the match, with a nice header, before he scored the second goal in the 57th minute by converting an assist from Alejandro Grimaldo through his nod into the bottom corner of the post.
Mikel Merino’s two goals against Bulgaria boost La Roja’s record to six in four qualifying competition games.
It was not a good night for Bulgaria, as Atanas Chernev mistakenly diverted a cross against his team, and a goal from a late penalty in stoppage time by Mikel Oyarzabal sealed the night with a 4-0 win for Spain.
While Spain continues to dominate the Group, Turkey has not given up on their win against Georgia, keeping their hope of qualifying alive. Turkey now sits only three points behind Spain, which has never lost a match since the qualifying game started.
