Vice President JD Vance arrived with the casket containing conservative activist Charlie Kirk on Thursday night as tributes started to pour in following his assassination during an event at Utah Valley University.
At the Salt Lake City airport, a military pallbearer detail carried the casket across the tarmac before it was ridden on to Air Force Two to be flown to Kirk’s home state of Arizona. Footage from the scene shows his wife, Erika Frantzve, visibly distraught as the casket was wheeled past.
In Phoenix, Frantzve exited the plane with Second Lady Usha Vance ahead of the casket being moved to Hansen Memorial Chapel. Kirk is anticipated to be laid to rest in Arizona.
The president, Donald Trump, said during a news conference on Thursday that he intended to attend Charlie Kirk’s funeral, which he said would probably be held next weekend.
The conservative youth organization Turning Point USA’s founder, Kirk, was murdered on Wednesday while the group was on its “American Comeback Tour.” The suspect, authorities said, had “no association” with the college but was able to blend in with the crowd.
A photograph of the suspect was later released by the F.B.I. The man was seen wearing a hat and sunglasses, as well as an American flag T-shirt with an eagle emblem.
