The divorce between Nicole Kidman and her ex-partner, Tom Cruise, in 2001 surprised many of the stars of Hollywood after they had been married for 11 years. The two stars featured in many movies together including including Days of Thunder, which was released in 1990 while they were together.
They were also stars in Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, released in 1999, and Far and Away in 1992. It was a surprising moment when it was revealed that it was Cruise who suggested that Kidman play the role of Alice Harford in Eyes Wide Shut, a decision that was embraced by Kudrick, due to their natural chemistry.
Cruise made mention of this to Sight and Sound magazine while he was preparing to receive the prestigious BFI Fellowship, explaining how he became part of the Kubrick project. He told the magazine outlet that the famous director reached out to him through Sydney Pollack.
“Stanley sent me a fax, and I flew straight to his house. I had already read the script, so we spent the whole day in his backyard discussing it,” Cruise shared.
Cruise, a longtime admirer of Kubrick’s work, mentioned that he needed no convincing. After talks with directors like Martin Scorsese and Pollack, he finally revealed his interest after his long discussions with Martin Scorsese and Pollack, who are both directors in Hollywood. He is also very concerned about Kidman’s appearance, acknowledging her talent and suitability for the role.
Kubrick, who was popular for his amazing roles in A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, died in 1999. Cruise will also be releasing a new movie titled Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning. The movie will be released on May 17, 1999.
