Toluca, a top-seeded side, on Thursday held the defending champions Club América to a goalless draw in a tough first leg of the Mexican Clausura championship series
América had the better chances with several opportunities created but was unable to convert any of them into a goal, leaving the series wide open.
The return leg to decide the game will be played next Sunday in Toluca, about 66 kilometers (40 miles) away from Mexico City.
América defeated and eliminated Cruz Azul in their semifinal game at the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup clash. América appears to be the only second team to win four consecutive Mexican league titles, a record that was last broken by Chivas between 1958 and 1962.
While Toluca, which currently stands as the third in all-time Mexican titles with 11, hopes to end a 15-year championship drought. Toluca won their last title in the Clausura in 2010 and has not won any of their three finals since then.
América will be playing against the LAFC on the last day of this month in Los Angeles for the final spot in the next Club World Cup.
