A legend of the Chicago Cubs and Hall of Famer, Ryne Sandberg, is dead at the age of 65 after a tough fight against metastatic prostate cancer.

The news of the sportsman’s death was shared with the public by the Chicago Cubs, where it was mentioned that he died at his home on Monday.

Sandberg had earlier announced his diagnosis early last year, briefly went into remission, but the cancer did not leave, and returned massively to fight back in late 2024.

Ryne Sandberg, a native of Spokane, part of Washington, was drafted by the Phillies in 1978 and made his first appearance for the team in 1981.

The legend was traded to the Chicago Cubs a year later, where he stayed and played 15 seasons with the team, batting .285 with 282 home runs, 344 stolen bases, and 2,386 hits. In his professional career, he made records that include winning 9 Gold Gloves, being a 10-time All-Star, and being the 1984 NL MVP.

He had an outstanding performance on June 23, 1984, and was celebrated with a statue at Wrigley Field. Sandberg recorded another achievement in 2005 when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, while his team retired his jersey number 23 the same year.
