A man many wrote off as a pitch invader, flipped over the viewer’s barrier during the game between the Pirates and Cubs in right field at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, the drop seemed not to go as intended, and he fell down the 21-foot Clemente Wall.
The fan was identified as 21-year-old Kavan Markwood, a former college football player.
Video of the incident showed Kavan, wearing no top and holding the barrier, before he leaped off and landed hard on the ground during Wednesday’s baseball game. Medics quickly rushed to him, and he was taken out on a stretcher.
Watch below:
Reports say that he was critically injured (fractured skull), while David McDonald, the South Allegheny School District Superintendent, said he was “fighting for his life”, but was responding to treatment.
Kavan Markwood graduated from South Allegheny High School in 2002 and won the team MVP during his time playing for the Gladiators during his school days.
He furthered his education at Walsh University and Wheeling University, and also played there.
Pittsburgh police concluded that his fall was an accident, however, many who watched the video thought that he voluntarily leaped off and fell.
“Fell?” @stevenvoiceover seemed to disagree.
“He totally leaped. Maybe drunk trying to get on field??” RainyDaze firmly concluded.
“So it had nothing to do with the amount of beers they sold him?” JJBlackin added.
According to the school’s superintendent, Kavan fell off while he was celebrating when Bucs’ Andrew McCutchen hit an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning.
