The United States President Donald Trump mentioned on Tuesday that he has given approval for a design that is worth $175 billion “Golden Dome” missile defense system, and also appointed Michael Guetlein, a U.S. Space Force General, to take charge of the project.
The Golden Dome, which will be modelled after Israel’s Iron Dome, will have more than a hundred satellites to track, detect, and intercept missiles coming from Russia and China.
The president stated that the Dome will be operational from 2029 and would “protect our homeland.” The office of Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed that discussions have begun on new security ties, as Canada expressed interest in becoming a part of the project.
This new initiative may likely face funding and political challenges. The Congressional Budget Office projects long-term costs could go up to $831 billion.
Among the concerns that have been raised about this new project are the procurement process and the roles of SpaceX, Palantir, and Anduril as the likely companies to be contracted.
States in the country that will benefit more from this initiative are Alaska, Florida, Georgia, and Indiana, with the potential suppliers to be L3Harris, Lockheed Martin, and RTX.
A $25 billion investment had earlier been proposed but remains associated with a contested $150 billion defence bill.
