Foreign students who study at Harvard University are in a confused state after the United States President Donald Trump‘s administration plans to stop the school from enrolling international students.
The decision, which was announced by the government on Thursday, is believed to have come after allegations against the university that it violated federal laws, causing the new administration to stop student visas and freeze $3 billion in federal grants.
A native of India who studies the executive leadership program at Harvard University, Shreya Mishra Reddy may not be able to graduate in July. “It’s been heartbreaking for my family,” she mentioned to the BBC.
Harvard currently has foreign students totalling more than 27% of the enrollment. The university mentioned that the decision of the government violates the law and may challenge it in court. Natives of India, Chinese, and other foreign students are scared that they may be forced to leave or transfer to remain in the country.
The new decision, which people suspect may be tied to a crackdown against universities with pro-Palestinian protests, has caused students, including Abdullah Shahid Sial, who hails from Pakistan, to feel “dehumanised.”
International students of the school now face anxiety over an unknown future, leases, and life plans. Many of the students are scared of exiting the United States and not being allowed to return, as the international education landscape is thrown into a confused state.
