Atletico Madrid‘s chances of clinching the LaLiga trophy continue to fade. On Saturday, they were unable to record three points after being held to a 0-0 draw by Alaves, a team in the relegation zone, at the Mendizorrotza Stadium.

Despite dominating the game, Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone could not create many opportunities or the urgency needed to destroy the defense of a determined Alaves.

The two teams were unable to produce any shots on target in the first half, with just one flashpoint being a red card shown to Julian Alvarez, who committed a foul against Facundo Garces, which was later brought down to a yellow card after a VAR review.

Antonio Griezmann, who finally had the opportunity to play his first league game in three matches, was unable to do much to help the team secure a win.

Jon Guridi missed a fine opportunity that could have helped Alaves go home with three points, heading wide from a near distance to the goal post. Simeone brought in Alexander Sorloth and Samuel Lino, the latter helping his team to fire their first shot on target in the 71st minute.

Jan Oblak came into the game at the other end to deny Kike Garcia.

Atletico Madrid now sits in third place in the league table with 67 points, nine points behind Barcelona, which is in first position in the LaLiga table. Alaves moves to 16th position, three points above the relegation zone.
