The new Snow White movie has gotten thousands of negative reviews after its trailer revealed the lady was Latino and dark skin-colored. Currently, the movie trailer has received over 728 thousand dislikes on YouTube, compared to only 28,000 likes, setting a record-breaking event in the film industry, and if you are wondering why, here are the popular reasons.
Why Is The New Snow White Movie Hated So Much?
The new Snow White film seemed to have started on a bad note. It first entered murky waters during its production when Peter Dinklage advised that it was not a good idea for Disney to use real dwarfs in shooting the movie, as they were in the original story – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
He argued that if Disney wanted to be progressive, then it should be in all quarters. So if they want to change Snow White to a Latino girl, then their story should not capture the seven dwarfs as they are, living in a cave.
His advice did not go well with the dwarf community.
Disney’s final decision to produce the film without using real-life dwarfs and instead, opting for computer animation was the first nail to go for the movie’s coffin.
Snow White cast herself, Rachel Zegler also had a pitfall when she referred to her “prince charming” as a stalker and weirdo. Though she claimed the comment was merely a joke that people did not get, it did not go well with core Snow White fans.
The heir to the root of the movie itself, David Hand, the son of the director who oversaw Snow White’s movie in 1937, also was not happy that Disney was trying to remake a classic in their own way, and called the entertainment company a “disgrace”.
Hand’s comment was upvoted by a Reddit user who said he (and probably speaking the minds of many others) was tired of these large movie producers going for quick profit by just making a movie of classic cartoons.
“There are “certain visuals and vibes that you just can’t get in live-action movies”, he said.
Aside from pointing out Disney’s lack of creativity and inability to make original stories, the Redditor wondered how Zegler was chosen to act as Snow White’s main character when she was not a fan of the movie itself.
Another major reason why the movie is receiving so much hate is that the original Snow White girl was white – her skin was white and fair as snow, but the new movie had Latino and dark-skinned Rachel Zegler.
Just like the movie remake of The Little Mermaid, this might be a Disney thing in their pursuit of diversity and black alignment, but as many noted – how would blacks feel if an old and classic black character is changed to a white person in the movie’s remake?
