During Portugal vs Uruguay match at the Qatar World Cup, a man interrupted the game when he ran into the football pitch waving a rainbow flag – a symbol for the LGBT movement.

The pitch invader wore a superman crested polo with the inscription “Save Ukraine” written on the front and “Respect For Iranian Women” written at the back.

The multi-colored or rainbow flag is used to symbolize and support the LGBTQIA movement. Qatar is strictly against homosexuality and any forms of LGBTQIA. The security personnel stationed in the stadiums have been disallowing people from entering with clothes or apparel that adorn such symbols.

A video captured the man running toward the center of the field and dropping the flag before he was caught and taken off the stadium by security personnel while the crowd booed.

This has sparked debate amongst fans and experts if the laws and customs of the host community should not be respected by visitors or if a waiver should be put in place.

The inscription to “save Ukraine” stems from the destruction being dealt to the masses as a result of the Russian forces invading their country. The war which started on February 24, 2022, has left over 6,600 people dead, according to a stat from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

Respect for the Iranian women most certainly refers to the fight of women in Iran for their rights and freedom. This agitation started after a woman, Mahsa Amini, died while under the care of the morality police for not dressing properly. Reports claim that over a hundred people have lost their lives as a result of the protests and ensuing violent conflicts.
