Police in Switzerland revealed on the afternoon of Thursday that a deadly fire accident had caused the death of almost 40 people, while no fewer than 115 people were injured, and many were affected with severe burns.
Those who were affected by the accident have been ferried to hospitals across the country, as a specialist burns unit situated in Milan, part of Italy, has been placed on standby to provide support.
Lausanne University Hospital has noted that it has received 22 victims so far for treatment; most of them are young people who are between the ages of 16 and 26.
Officials have intensified efforts to ensure that they recognise those who died so that their bodies can be taken to their families, as reported by Beatrice Pilloud, a regional chief prosecutor.
In the midst of these efforts, Italy’s ambassador to Switzerland has mentioned that the process of identifying victims may last weeks due to the level of injuries.
The fire accident has affected people of different nationalities. Italy noted that 16 of its citizens were missing and not fewer than 15 are in the hospital, while French media reported that at least two people from France sustained injuries.
France has committed their solidarity, while the UK revealed that its staff at the consulate are on standby to provide support to those affected.
