A seagull vomiting a rat for its young to eat near the smoke chimney seconds before the announcement of the selection of a new and first American pope, Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, has again left people talking.
It all started when rolling camera footage captured an adult seagull and its young on the roof, beside the chimney that lets out coloured smoke to announce if a new pope has been successfully chosen or not.
The adult seagull vomited a rat for its baby to feed on, and moments after, the anticipated white smoke was let out of the chimney, which signaled that a new pope had been selected.
Though there is no known significance to what happened, netizens have attributed many personal meanings to it.
It was interpreted to mean a father nourishing his flock, which is in itself a good omen, just that others faulted the food, a rat, which is widely seen as an unclean pest and bearer of disease. “Sounds like the ultimate good omen”, Joshua said sarcastically.
Historically, a seagull was also present on the chimney when the former Pope Francis was elected.
Spiritual Significance Of A Seagull
While a dove widely represents the Holy Spirit, does the appearance of a seagull mean an omen? Well, according to a Birdtipper, seagulls are related to spiritual messengers that communicate between the spiritual and physical world, and are also involved in moving souls to the afterlife after death on earth.
If you’ve read survival stories of people lost at sea, you will most likely recount their hopes spiking when they see seagulls, because that means land is near.
In general, seagulls are related to positive omens of guidance, hope, and new opportunities. However, they are also related to bad omens in some cultures, especially when they are far away from the sea. The bird is also known to be an opportunist.
What Does A Rat Symbolize
While seeing a rat close can irk many to their knees, the mammal generally symbolizes intelligence, fertility, and growth. However, they also widely represent hidden vices, uncleanliness, sickness, wastefulness, and death.
