George Wendt, who was well known for his role as Norm Peterson in the much-rated movie, “Cheers”, passed away at the age of 76.
The news of his passing was announced by his family, who confirmed that the iconic star died peacefully at home in his sleep on Tuesday morning, 20 May, as announced by The Agency Group.
“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” the family said in a statement. “He will be missed forever.”
His portrayal as Norm, the beer-loving, wisecracking regular at the Boston bar, secured him six consecutive Emmy nominations when the program’s 11-season run was produced in 1982.
He became famous for his warm presence and dey humor. His entrances were always greeted with the enthusiastic cry of “Norm!”, showing how his role in the series was acknowledged by viewers.
The movie, ‘Cheers’, which was set in a neighborhood bar, became a cultural phenomenon that earned 28 Emmys.
Wendt featured alongside other talented actors, including Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer, and Woody Harrelson.
Cheers also contributed to the rise of the very successful spin-off Frasier.
Many have shown their respect and paid tribute after his death, including ones from his fans and cast mates, by honoring Wendt’s comedic work and the role he played in the movie industry.
