Former FBI Director James Comey deleted an Instagram post featuring seashells arranged to form the numbers “86 47” after Republicans got upset. “86” means get rid of, and “47” is Donald Trump’s number as the 47th president. Critics said it was a threat against Trump.
Comey, who became a Trump critic after being fired in 2017, said he posted the picture during a beach walk and thought the shells formed a political message, not a call to violence. After the backlash, he removed the post and explained himself in a subsequent Instagram post.
Kristi Noem, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, posted on his social media account that the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service have commenced an investigation into the alleged threat. A Secret Service spokesperson confirmed they were aware of the post but wouldn’t comment further.
FBI Director Kash Patel said he was aware of the post and offered support to the Secret Service. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard publicly slammed Comey and said he should be in jail and that he should have known what “86 47” meant.
Former FBI Director James Comey led the FBI’s investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election and Hillary Clinton’s email scandal.
The two sides condemned him for the way he handled both, and neither investigation led to court cases. Trump has repeatedly attacked Comey, calling him a “showboat” and a “grandstander.”
