The USMNT head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, has reassured Americans that their national football team had the time to fix their mistakes before the World Cup.
This is coming after the United States team recorded two consecutive defeats during the international break. Seeking for their fourth Concacaf nations league title, the United States lost their quarter-final match to Panama and then, went ahead to lose the third-place match to Canada.
Citizens of the United States have expressed their frustrations, especially because of their rivalry with Canada. Both defeats were recorded in Sofi stadium, the home of the North American powerhouse.
“It’s better [to lose] now because I think we have time,” Pochettino said after Sunday’s match.
“Because if we will be in this situation in one year time, for sure. I will tell you, ‘Houston, we have a problem. SOS.'”
Pochettino, who was brought in last year to change things with the team, still believe they have time to get their act right. At least they have roughly a year before the global competition.
He also admitted the frustration of the fans and encouraged them to believe and support the national team.
“We are all [disappointed] and the fans need to feel the disappointment that we didn’t win. But I’m not going to allow [us] to feel pessimistic because I think we have good players. We are going to find a way to perform, and for sure, we are going to compete in a different way.”
Players with high expectations, like the U.S. Captain Christian Pulisic, failed to make an impact in any of the matches.
“I’m not happy with my output, but yeah, it’s partly me and partly just finding different ways to get the ball in that position,” Pulisic said. “It was tough for whatever reason in the last two games.
“We never really found a rhythm and were aggressive enough in the attack to create enough chances, so that’s what I look at first as an attacking player.”
