Tottenham Hotspur suffered an embarrassing 1-0 loss in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 game against AZ Alkmaar as Lucas Bergvall found the back of his own net.
Lucas Bergvall’s embarrassing goal came just in the 18th minute after the game started, giving AZ Alkmaar an early lead when a corner from Peer Koopmeiners located Troy Parrott, who once played as a forward for Tottenham. Bergvall sliced his shot that looped against Djed Spence to hit the net.
It was not a good day for the teenager as his goal gave AZ Alkmaar their first victory against any team from the Premier League side in their 12 meetings.
Tottenham Hotspur did not perform as expected as their outcome was sluggish despite having eight days to prepare for the game, while they were unable to fire a shot at target until the 88th minute of the game. Tottenham’s head coach Postecoglou decided not to include fit-against stars such as Dominic Solanke, Cristian Romero, and Micky van de Ven in his starting lineup.
Tottenham struggled to create a mark, with Bergvall and Son Heung-min losing many chances while Guglielmo Vicario did not give an opportunity to Parrott to record a goal.
Rodrigo Bentancur unfortunately got a booking that would deny him from playing in the second leg while Dominic Solanke limped off late on. Tottenham will not have to create a good opportunity in their second leg that will be played at home next Thursday.
