Angeliño and Eldor Shomurodov netted two decisive goals to earn AS Roma a 2-1 win in their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 first leg against Athletic Club, which extends their unbeaten streak to seven games after winning six with one draw.
The home side, Athletic Club, started well with Íñigo Ruíz de Galarreta and Unai Gómez missing early opportunities that could have been converted to goals. A fine attempt was made for AS Roma through a shot to Niccolò Pisilli, but his trial was blocked.
Paulo Dybala later came close to hitting the net with an effort that went through Mile Svilar, but the attempt was stopped by the woodwork.
The visitors scored the first goal of the game in the second half as Iñaki Williams converted a misplaced header from Aitor Paredes to find the net.
AS Roma did not wait much to respond as Zeki Çelik created an assist that Angeliño converted into a goal to make it a draw. Athletic went on to dominate with threats from Nico Williams and Unai Gómez, but Roma did not give up on its defense.
Alexis Saelemaekers created a fine assist that found Shomurodov at the late moment, who in turn fired it to make a goal.
Roma are now in the lead as they promise not to relent in their second leg while Athletic Club will have a lot to do to match up Roma’s energy and eventually defeat them if possible.
