A surveillance camera showed how a thief crept inside a car while the owner was buying fuel at Red Bank gas station and stole the vehicle.
The car theft happened on Friday night at about 8:25 pm at the Shell station beside Newman Springs Road and Shrewsbury Avenue.
The video below showed the owner outside his car while an attendant pumped gas into the black-colored vehicle. The car snatcher then came down from the rear passenger side of a Pennsylvania-registered White BMW X5 and crept towards the car and to the door, like a wild predator stalking prey.
He then enters the driver’s side just as the owner finishes paying for gas. The owner realizes what was happening, rushes forward, and opens the driver’s door, but quickly backs off as if the thief held out a gun.
The car hijacker then gets away behind the white SUV he came with.
The Red Bank Police Department through a representative Mike Frazee said they were still looking for the thieves as well as the stolen car. While Frazee asks the public for information that will help site investigation, he urges the public to pay attention to their surroundings and always be vigilant.
The latest grand auto theft is another reminder to always shut the car engine, take the key out of the ignition if possible, and lock the vehicle while refueling at a gas station – the worst is to leave the engine running.
