President-elect Donald Trump has named Sebastian Gorka for the position of deputy assistant to the president and senior director for counterterrorism. This appointment has created a lot of controversy, especially from John Bolton, who previously served as national security adviser. Bolton has openly criticized Gorka’s qualifications for the job and has questioned his loyalty as well.
Sebastian Gorka is a conservative commentator and was once an adviser in the White House. He is known for making controversial statements and having connections that many find problematic. Gorka worked in the Trump administration but was let go in 2017. He has actively supported various policies put forth by the Trump administration, particularly the ban on refugees and individuals from certain, mostly, Muslim countries.
Even though many people view him as a polarizing figure, Trump recently referred to Gorka in a statement as a “tireless advocate for the America First Agenda and the MAGA Movement.”
John Bolton, who was the national security adviser during Trump’s presidency about 8 years ago, clearly expressed his opinions about Sebastian Gorka’s new appointment. In an interview with Kaitlan Collins from CNN, Bolton labeled Gorka a “con man” and spoke of his doubts about whether Gorka is qualified for the position. He firmly stated, “I wouldn’t have him in any U.S. government” and that Gorka’s appointment could negatively impact counterterrorism efforts.
Additionally, Bolton challenged Gorka’s claims about his education and recommended that a thorough FBI background check should be conducted to investigate Gorka’s qualifications and past. He also argued that Sebastian Gorka’s loyalty to Trump is more about blind obedience. He stated, “He doesn’t display loyalty. He displays fealty. And that’s what Trump wants.” Bolton believes that Trump favors advisers who will always back his choices without question, instead of those who might provide their own, independent viewpoints.
As of the time of writing, Sebastian Gorka or his team has not yet responded to these criticisms.
