Comedian John Mulaney and actor Olivia Munn have joyfully announced the birth of their second child, a daughter named Méi June Mulaney. On Sunday, the couple shared the news through Instagram, revealing that Méi was born via a surrogate on September 14, 2024.
Olivia Munn, 44, said in the post that she experienced a lot of emotions about not being able to carry her own daughter herself. However, after meeting their gestational surrogate for the first time, all that changed for good.
“We spoke mother to mother. She showed me so much grace and understanding, I knew I had found a real-life angel. Words cannot express my gratitude that she kept our baby safe for 9 months and made our dreams come true,” she wrote.
Before concluding, Olivia also explained that the name Méi, pronounced May, means “Plum” in Chinese. “I am so proud of my little plum, my little dragon for making the journey to be with us. My heart has exploded.”
The couple, who tied the knot barely two months ago, are also parents to a two-year-old son, Malcolm Hiệp, born in November 2021. Earlier this year, Olivia Munn revealed via Instagram that she had undergone a double mastectomy after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Her husband Mulaney, 42, was supportive throughout her battle as she received multiple surgeries and hormone suppression therapy. She has previously opened up about receiving a partial hysterectomy/oophorectomy while she was still treating her cancer, and that she had frozen her eggs in hopes of having more kids in the future.
Hysterectomy is a procedure where the uterus and cervix of a female are removed surgically, while an oophorectomy targets the ovaries. These two procedures terminate the possibility of Olivia carrying her own children but it has helped remove hormones from her body that may cause the cancer to return.
Olivia Munn’s Instagram post included several photos of the family bonding with their newborn daughter. One touching image showed the actress holding Méi while sitting on Mulaney’s lap in a hospital bed. Another picture captured Méi peacefully sleeping, and another showed Olivia cradling her daughter.
Mulaney also shared a video of himself gently patting Méi on the back as she spat up on his shoulder, humorously captioning it, “We stole so much stuff from the hospital.”
