Celebrity chef Justin Sutherland, known for his appearances on popular cooking shows like “Iron Chef America,” is facing serious allegations and professional fallout following his arrest in Minnesota on June 28. The 39-year-old chef was charged with one felony count of threats of violence with reckless disregard after an alleged incident involving his girlfriend.
According to court documents, police had responded to a 911 call suggesting that a man was holding a woman at gunpoint. Upon arrival, they encountered Sutherland, who reportedly reacted aggressively to the officers’ commands.
The chef’s girlfriend told police that an argument over attending a music festival escalated, with Sutherland allegedly placing his hands around her neck and threatening her life. She also claimed he brandished a handgun and struck her with it.
In the wake of these allegations, Justin Sutherland has experienced significant professional repercussions. A St. Paul nonprofit canceled its partnership with the chef to develop a new concept for Golden Thyme Coffee and Café. Additionally, Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine ended its collaboration with Sutherland on an annual barbecue festival called “Smoke Out,” which had been ongoing since 2018.
Just recently, Sutherland, who has appeared as a judge on “Top Chef” and “Chopped” and competed on various cooking shows, issued a statement following his arrest. While apologizing for the situation, he maintained his innocence and expressed his intention to prove it through the judicial system.
“Over the weekend, I found myself in a situation where I was taken into custody and accused of a crime. I deeply regret putting myself in that position and the pain and distress caused to those around me. I sincerely apologize to my family, friends, and fans.
I am innocent of these charges and look forward to using the judicial system to prove my innocence. Notwithstanding, this incident has made me realize the urgent need to seek professional help and make significant changes in my life.
I am committed to making amends and seeking treatment. Once again, I offer my sincerest apologies to everyone affected by my behavior. Thank you for your support and understanding during this difficult time while we wait for the truth to come forward and further prove my innocence.”
The chef was released without bail and is reportedly entering a treatment center. His attorney, John Daly, told PEOPLE that the complaint “is riddled with falsehoods” and that Justin Sutherland “vehemently denies all the allegations.”
