The outage was initially flagged on DownDetector around 10:30 a.m. EST, with a peak of approximately 519,988 nationwide users reporting issues with Facebook. Instagram users also faced disruptions, with numerous complaints about feed refreshing problems.
Reports of the outage surfaced from various countries, including the U.K., Japan, and Brazil, indicating its widespread impact.
Meta officially announced the resolution of the outage at 12:36 p.m. EST, confirming the restoration of services and extending apologies for any inconvenience caused.
The root cause of the outages remains undisclosed at this time.
In light of the outage, there is speculation about its potential connection to Meta’s compliance efforts with the European Union’s new Digital Markets Act, with a deadline looming. However, it remains unclear if the outage is linked to any preparatory measures undertaken by the company.
