Landon Dupont, Player Granted ‘Exceptional Status,’ Chosen As First Overall Pick In WHL

The WHL draft has commenced, and the first overall pick has been announced, with a standout 14-year-old player earning the distinction of being deemed “exceptional.”

In a statement on Thursday, the league revealed that Landon Dupont from Calgary was selected by the Everett Silvertips, a team situated in a community just north of Seattle.

“WE GOT HIM!” the team announced on X.

Dupont, currently a defenseman with Edge School’s U18 team, has become the ninth player in the WHL’s history to receive approval to play a full year ahead of schedule.

He now joins an esteemed group of players, including Michael Misa, Connor Bedard, Shane Wright, Joe Veleno, Sean Day, Connor McDavid, Aaron Ekblad, and John Tavares, who have been granted exceptional status to participate in the Canadian Hockey League.

As the son of a former Calgary Flames player, Dupont will be entering Grade 10 once the WHL season kicks off.
