McIlroy Trails by One Shot Following Third Round of Wells Fargo

Rory McIlroy narrowed the gap on Xander Schauffele’s lead in the Wells Fargo Championship to just one shot after an impressive third round in North Carolina.

Initially trailing leader Schauffele by four strokes after the second round, McIlroy, a three-time winner at the Quail Hollow tournament, showcased his prowess with a flawless four-under-par 67 in the third round to reduce the deficit.

Having triumphed at the course in 2010, 2015, and 2021, McIlroy demonstrated his familiarity and skill, particularly with a bogey-free performance.

Throughout the front nine, the world number two maintained a solid two-under-par, before adding two more birdies on the back nine to further close the gap.

Meanwhile, Schauffele continued to display strong form, managing two birdies and an eagle to post a one-under 70.

Sungjae Im remains within striking distance, trailing the American leader by four shots at eight under, while Sepp Straka of Austria is one shot further back.

Among the English contingent, Tommy Fleetwood climbed to a tied 18th position after carding an even-par 71. However, Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick experienced disappointing rounds, with both players dropping eight and seven shots, respectively, to slide down the leaderboard.

Looking ahead, the second men’s major of the year, the US PGA Championship, is scheduled to take place next week at Valhalla.
