Congressman Henry Cuellar was reportedly carjacked at gunpoint by a group of armed robbers who stopped him near his Washington home on Monday.
These armed robbers in knit caps and ski masks stole the congressman’s white Toyota crossover while he was parking. However, he was not harmed during the incident.
“Thank you to Metro PD and Capitol Police for their swift action and for recovering the Congressman’s vehicle,” Hochberg said.
The police also recovered Cuellar’s electronics and other valuables left in the car, including his cell phone.
He had also left in his car a sushi dinner he had just gotten.
“What really got me upset was they took my sushi, but anyway, that’s something else,” Cuellar told CNN.
Crime in Washington has become a growing concern since the pandemic, with carjackings in the area skyrocketing in recent years.
U.S. Capitol Police are investigating the case with the help of the city’s Metropolitan Police Department and they are still working to track down the suspect.
According to a Washington Post analysis, there were about a thousand carjackings in the state in the past year.
The government of Washington has taken a stand against criminal activities, opting to keep maximum sentences for crimes that could escalate.
