Wimbledon Quarterfinalist Nick Kyrgios Will Appear In Court In Australia On An Assault Charge

The Wimbledon quarterfinalist Nick Kyrgios will show up in court the following month to answer to a charge related to an alleged attack on a former partner in the last months of last year, according to officials.

According to Australia’s Canberra Times, Kyrgios is aware of the indictment and his attorney, Jason Moffett, has been advised on the situation.

According to Moffett, “Mr. Kyrgios takes the claim very seriously because of the seriousness of its nature.”

Although the “exact nature” of the charges “is neither certain at this time nor substantiated by either the prosecution” or Kyrgios himself,” another attorney for the player claimed on Tuesday.

In a statement sent to the media via email, attorney Pierre Johannessen stated that while Mr. Kyrgios was “dedicated to resolving any and all charges once clear,” “taking the situation seriously does not warrant any misreading of the process Mr. Kyrgios is expected to follow.” Kyrgios is not “considered charged” with an offence until a first court appearance, according to Johannessen, who also stated that “the claims are not considered as fact” by the court.

According to the Canberra Times, Kyrgios, 27, has a court appointment scheduled for August 2.

On Wednesday, Kyrgios, 27, will compete against Cristian Garin of Chile. The Australian is playing in his first Grand Slam quarterfinal in seven and a half years. He is 0-2 in his previous two.

The Grand Slam run of Kyrgios has not been without controversy. After his first-round match, he was fined $10,000 for spitting in the direction of a heckler, and $4,000 for using an audible obscenity during his tumultuous third-round victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas.
